Gospel
Reflection Tuesday, First Week of LentMatthew 6:vii-fifteen

I n the gospel reading Jesus contrasts the prayer he gives to his disciples with the babbling of pagans. The reference is to pagans who seek to dispense the gods past an abundance of words and sounds. Jesus reveals a God who cannot exist manipulated or controlled in that mode. On the contrary, in coming before God we open ourselves to God, we give up before God. That mental attitude towards God is at the cadre of the prayer that Jesus gives us in today's gospel reading, which is in many ways a prayer of surrender. In that prayer Jesus teaches us to pray for the coming of God's kingdom, not ours, the doing of God'southward will on earth, not ours. He teaches u.s.a. to recognize our dependence on God for what is most important, forgiveness for our sins, sustenance for body and soul, strength when evil puts us to the test or tempts u.s.a.. It is a prayer that acknowledges who we are in relation to God, sons and daughters of a loving Father who desires all that is best for united states of america. In some means, it is a prayer of trust. It is but to someone we fully trust that we could say, 'your kingdom come, your will be done'. Likewise as beingness a prayer of surrender and trust, information technology is besides a prayer of petition.

J esus is showing us what to ask for when nosotros come before God in our need. All our prayers of petition are to be shaped in some way by this primordial prayer of petition. It is too a prayer of intercession. It is a prayer that is prayed in the plural, non the atypical. We address God as our Begetter. We ask our Begetter to forgive all of us our sins, to give all of us our daily bread and to stand by all of united states of america when evil lurks at the door and tests us. It is a communal prayer; we are praying for one some other. The linguistic communication of the prayer is 'our', 'us' and 'we'. Here is a prayer which is at the same fourth dimension a lesson on how to pray, coming from the one Teacher.
